Memoirs of the Court of Queen Elizabeth
by Lucy Aikin
When I started reading this title on my Kindle I did not pay attention to the publication date but quickly realized it had to be from the 1800s. The language and the sentence structure were more formal than modern. My curiosity sent me to the publication date—1818. I went on to discover that it had recently been published in paperback.
This is an amazing book and one I would highly recommend to any Elizabethan scholar. Aikin utilized primary documents from multiple sources letters from Elizabeth to Cecil, proceedings from Essex’s trial, and several ambassadors’ dispatches. This was jam packed with contemporary material which made it a historian’s dream.
